Melanotan I (Afamelanotide) is a synthetic α-MSH analog that selectively activates the MC1R receptor to stimulate melanogenesis. Unlike Melanotan II, it acts primarily on skin pigmentation without significant effects on appetite or sexual function. An analog has received regulatory approval for erythropoietic protoporphyria.

  • Dermatology: Melanotan (afamelanotide analog) is studied for UV-independent melanogenesis through selective MC1R receptor activation. Research examines the molecular mechanisms of melanocyte stimulation, melanin production kinetics, and the photoprotective effects of increased melanin content. Studies investigate its potential for reducing UV damage, preventing photosensitivity reactions, and providing protective tanning in fair-skinned populations.
  • Photobiology: Melanotan is a key research compound in photobiology, studied for melanocyte activation and its relationship to skin cancer prevention. Research examines whether pharmacologically enhanced melanin production provides clinically meaningful photoprotection, the UV dose-response relationship in melanized versus control skin, and the long-term dermatological outcomes of sustained melanogenesis stimulation.
  • Rare Diseases: An analog of Melanotan (afamelanotide) has received regulatory approval for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare genetic condition causing extreme light sensitivity. Research examines the mechanism of protection, optimal dosing for phototolerance improvement, and whether similar MC1R agonism can benefit other photosensitivity disorders including polymorphous light eruption and solar urticaria.

Reconstitution Protocol

  1. 1 Remove the flip-off cap and wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab.
  2. 2 Using a sterile syringe, draw the desired volume of bacteriostatic water (BAC water).
  3. 3 Insert the needle into the vial at an angle and slowly dispense the water down the inside wall — do not spray directly onto the powder.
  4. 4 Gently swirl (do not shake) the vial until the powder is fully dissolved.
  5. 5 Label the vial with the reconstitution date and concentration.

Storage Conditions

Unreconstituted

Store at -20°C to 4°C (freezer or refrigerator). Stable for 24+ months.

Reconstituted

Refrigerate at 2–8°C. Use within 30 days for optimal stability.

Avoid

Repeated freeze-thaw cycles, direct sunlight, and temperatures above 25°C.

Always note the reconstitution date on the vial label to track shelf life accurately.

Safety & Compliance

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety goggles when handling research compounds.
  • Work in a clean, controlled environment (laminar flow hood recommended).
  • Dispose of sharps and used materials in approved biohazard containers.
  • This product is for laboratory research use only (RUO) — not for human or veterinary use.
